Got questions?

Long Island has long distinguished itself from the rest of New York. There are approximately 3 million residents of Nassau and Suffolk counties, a population much larger than many of the United States, but we still do not have proper representation by our state leaders. Albany doesn't truly understand the needs of Long Island, and the boroughs of New York City dictate the direction of our state without our ability to stand against it. This leaves many Long Islands feeling disenfranchised and without hope.

We are not proposing a new or novel idea. Discussion of Long Island separating from New York dates back to at least 1896. Every few years the topic comes back to the forefront, and then it disappears again. We as Long Islands are tired of being ruled by leaders who do not understand our needs. We are tired of our voices not being heard. The real question is why after 100 years of discussion have we been unable to finalize this separation?

This is one of the most important questions, is it even feasible for Long Island to support itself? Currently  Nassau and Suffolk counties account for 12% of the total GDP of New York state, which on its own is more than a large number of self governed states. If Long Island were to become its own state, it could provide opportunity for us to open the doors for more businesses to start or move here, which will allow us the ability to grow even more. We do not believe that an extensive investigation has been performed by our representatives to show us the results of the separation, so one needs to be performed. We are completely aware that separation of a state will have challenges, it has been a long time since this has occurred (back to 1863 when West Virginia separated), but it being difficult shouldn't be a reason to not pursue something that, in the end, we believe will be the best for us.
